PARE—The Starting Point & TEST

Image
Kediri, East Java I was wondering about a place where I can shoot two birds with one stone, a place where I can learn and travel at the same time. Suggested by some friends, my option goes to Pare—a sub-district known as  Kampung Inggris (English Village) which is located in Kediri, East Java. From Juanda airport I was picked up by a shuttle that I had booked. I found the agency number in one of the institution websites that I had looked up before. It costed me IDR 140,000 for four hour ride. The shuttle even took me around to find a place to stay. What a lucky passenger! I arrived about 7 pm, it was drizzling. However it didn’t disturb people activities, along the main road little cafes and warung lied a part adored with their dim lights, many groups of young ladies and boys were riding on their bike, some were walked under the umbrella that they held on tightly. Meanwhile on their other hands, they were holding some books. As its name, Kampung Inggris, it offers

Candi Surowono

Desa Canggu, Pare, Kediri East Java It was gloomy outside. I could see it from my window, I got up in a good mood, I brushed my teeth, I washed my face, dried it out and put some sunscreen on.  I changed my clothes and had my breakfast. I put my slipper on and I walked to the front gate with my red folded umbrella in my hand. The road was crowded. Most people were biking to the west and east. I waved my hand to stop becak—three wheel public transportation that usually biked or driven. One of becaks got closer and stopped in front of me. “Mau dianter ke mana mbak?” He spoke Indonesian in very thick Javanese accent. “Saya mau pergi ke Candi Surowono” I answer politely, as soft as I could. I got onto the becak after short bargaining. We made a deal that IDR 50,000 for taking me to three places—Candi Surowono, Surowono Cave and Pare Square. I sat quietly, looked out the road, the crowd, the grey cloud then spoiled by paddies field and fish ponds. It took about 15 mi

Durga and Una at Candi Tegowangi

There are always pros and cons, positive and negative, yin and yang in every single thing; even in the worst thing you can find a piece of positivity that you can taste. Therefore developing from negative to positive or vice versa is typically human. Even in Hindus mythology, some goddess can appear in two different opposite forms. During my short trip to East Java I travelled around one of its regencies and found Candi Tegowangi—one of remains from MajaPahit Kingdom that was erected around 14 th century. The Relief in this candi told me about the series of story about the Goddes Durga and Una which are originally one goddess. Durga represents the infortune and Uma is embedded virtue. In the relief Durga was purified by Sadewa and Pandawa. Durga was bathed with sacred water that kept within the dragon jar. After the purification, she develops from negative to positive, fromDurga, she turn into Una. Tegowangi is a square candi surrounded by several arcas , those are Parwati, Ar
