Durga and Una at Candi Tegowangi
There are always pros and cons, positive and negative, yin and yang in
every single thing; even in the worst thing you can find a piece of positivity
that you can taste. Therefore developing from negative to positive or vice
versa is typically human. Even in Hindus mythology, some goddess can appear in
two different opposite forms. During my short trip to East Java I travelled
around one of its regencies and found Candi Tegowangi—one of remains from
MajaPahit Kingdom that was erected around 14th century. The Relief in this candi told me about the
series of story about the Goddes Durga and Una which are originally one
goddess. Durga represents the infortune and Uma is embedded virtue. In the
relief Durga was purified by Sadewa and Pandawa. Durga was bathed with sacred
water that kept within the dragon jar. After the purification, she develops from
negative to positive, fromDurga, she turn into Una. Tegowangi is a square candi
surrounded by several arcas, those
are Parwati, Ardhana and Garuda. On each corner, a shady Mojopahit tree stood
firmly. Mojo is a name its fruit and Pahit
means bitter. Mojopahit is what the name of the kingdom is derived from.
Candi Tegowangi is located in
Tegowangi village which belong to sub-district Plemahan, Kediri. Becak or ojek
is public transportation that can reach this place. It takes about twenty
minutes from Pare—Kampung Inggris.
