Jerowaru is one of sub districts in East Lombok. This area is located on the
southern peninsula. Besides, hosting tens wonderful beaches, it is also known
as the biggest salt producer in Lombok. When you come around to this place you
will see the busy farmers are harvesting, briskly walking while lifting two big
jars and packing it in the middle of beaches plantations. In making good
quality of salt, the farmers make a verdant of molds on the land to put the sea
water. From this water, salt is produced by evaporating. Therefore this process
of salt making is very depending on the weather since it needs sunlight for the
evaporation.
It takes about 1-3 weeks to produce salt.
In Sasak daily life, salt is very important part in cooking a tasty
cuisine which is always spicy and salty. Sasak cooks believe that sea salt is
much tastier that table salt (refined salt). Although it is widely known that
table salt is healthier, most Sasak prefer to use sea salt. Besides salt is mostly used to send away evil spirits and Ginnie.
